sexual revolution: happening or hype?

With all the movies and articles about couples living together before marriage, premarital sex, debunking the myth of the virgin bride, gay men coming out of the closet, etc, one can get the impression that a sexual revolution is underway in India. But are the prominent blips—kissing in films / the concerted attack of the industry on Mallika Sherawat, sexy cellphone videoclips circulating through schools, new daring dress and ensuing crackdown, the launch of Indian Playboy and Indian Maxim—real signs or just media hype? Is India really loosening up? Are more kids dating than, say, ten years ago? Are more people having sex before marriage? Are women saying no to virginity? Taking control of their sex lives in other ways?

Never gonna happen. Not in a million years. This is the coca cola version of the tequila shot that was the sexual revolution. sexy but safe.

We've always humped a lot, but behind the bushes and under the sheets, but the openness and dating scene is still mostly restricted to the metros.

as a born NRI, who's done countless trips back to India, I'd say the so-called revolution is happening only at the surface, and only among the elite. It's not easi-ER for women to make certain stands, only because most of them are rich enough to get away with it - and that's a paltry number compared to the rest of India. I'd say the sexual revolution is here when a girl from Bihar, single and working-class, can walk into a public pharmacy and coolly ask for contraception without blinking an eye.

The Indian sexual revolution is a long way off. The last of the non islamic land of chaperoned virgins still can not seem to free itself from the shackles of tradition imposed in equal measure both by religion and by politics. Women wil have a hard bargaining at their hands even if they tried. Best of luck to all those who are tyring-
